Does everyone hate mail as much as I do? Sometimes I feel like Kramer on Seinfeld and just want to cancel my mail. 90% of my mail goes straight from the mailbox into the garbage. So it upset me when I saw how much money campaigns are wasting on mail. Since the beginning of 2015, campaigns have spent approximately $448 million dollars on various different type of mail. This includes design, printing and of course postage.
The Republican National Committee tops the list at $45 million, followed by the Democratic National Committee at $34 million and then President Trump’s MAGA Committee at $19 million. When it comes to mail, Hillary did not even come close to Trump. She only spent $6 million on mail and Bernie only spent $4.6 million. Elizabeth Warren is also supporting the US Post Office. She spent $3.3 million on mail.
Interestingly, in some states direct mail works or at least the campaigns think it works. The Democratic Party in Florida spent $11 million on mail, compared to the Florida Republican Party that spent $7.5 million. In Pennsylvania, the Democratic Party spent $7.6 million and the Republican Party spent $7.4 million. However the Democratic Party in Ohio spent $4.3 million, while the Republicans only spent $974 thousand. The Democratic Party spent $4 million in Nevada while the Republican Party has only spent $1.4 million in that state.
Maybe if politicians would join us all in the 21st century, we could get rid of political “Junk” mail and Yard Signs and save a lot of money. Then maybe they could actually do something other than begging us for more...
