28% of Rahm Emanuel’s donations came from other States. If you did not know, Rahm Emanuel is the current Mayor of Chicago. Now I do not agree with but understand people in different states trying to influence Federal Elections. However, why should Californians be able to potentially help decide the next mayor of Chicago. Chicago, one of my favorite cities, has enough problems right now without Californians trying to help. Over the years, Rahm has received almost $9 million from donors in New York ($3.5 million), California ($3.3 million) and Washington, DC ($1.9 million).
Just this year, Rahm received $261 thousand from donors in New York, $226 thousand from donors in California, $116 thousand from Florida and $205 thousand from donors in Texas. Yes, donors in Texas and Florida also like to meddle in other states’ elections. While Rahm received the lion’s share, he is not alone in Illinois. This year donors in New York gave $1 million to Illinois State-level candidates and PACs, Californians gave $952 thousand, Florida gave $798 thousand and Texas gave $725 thousand. Again none of these donations are for Federal position it is all for Illinois State-level candidates and PACs.
Now Chicago is one of our major cities and Rahm was also President Obama’s Chief of Staff for a while, so I can see people in other states wanting to help him. However, what about Derek Lindblom? Derek Lindblom is running for Alderman in the Lincoln Park 43rd Ward. He has received $50 thousand from out-of-state donors. Why would anyone in New York care about an Alderman position in Lincoln Park?
