With the California primary election all over the news, we thought we would look to see who is dominating the donations. Of course our recent piece on Super PACs shows that candidates do not need to actually receive the money to benefit from a donation. For the Republicans running for the California Senate seat, for their sake I hope that is the case because they have not raised a lot of money. We could not find most of the Republican candidates in the FEC database. Erin Cruz has only raised $25,000 and Arun Bhumitra only raised $12,650 and borrowed $41,000. In comparison, Dianne Feinstein has raised $1.7 million and Kevin De Leon raised $830,000 since the beginning of March this year.
Dianne Feinstein picked up $1 million from California donors and $300,000 from Massachusetts (ActBlue). However, she also picked up $200,000 from Washington DC friends, $30,000 from New York and $29,000 from Virginia. She even received $300 from a lady in Utah. Kevin De Leon’s donations are more concentrated. Almost all of his donations came from California and Massachusetts (ActBlue). He did pick up $36,000 from donors in DC, but no one in Utah gave him money.
